Curator’s note

Bacchus and Ariadne

Painted by Titian in the 1520s, this mythological scene captures the moment Ariadne — abandoned on Naxos by Theseus — first encounters the wine god Bacchus and his retinue. Titian heightens the drama with the figures' vigorous gestures and bold contrasts of colour.
