Curator’s note
Madonna and Child
Painted in the 13th century by Berlinghiero, who worked in Lucca, Italy, this Madonna and Child closely follows the Byzantine icon tradition — solemn, flattened figures against a gold ground. It is a vivid glimpse of European painting before the realism of the Renaissance.
