The Ambassadors

Hans Holbein the Younger's 1533 double portrait surrounds two French envoys with scientific and musical instruments and books, signalling their learning and status. A distorted skull hidden at the base of the composition — an anamorphosis — resolves into shape only when viewed from a sharp angle, a reminder of mortality beneath worldly achievement.
