The Large Plane Trees (Road Menders at Saint-Rémy)

Painted during Van Gogh's time at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, showing road menders beneath great plane trees. He worked on a patterned cloth rather than canvas, so the fabric's design shows through the unpainted areas, while his swirling strokes animate the autumn trees.
