Venus and Mars

Painted by Sandro Botticelli in the 1480s, this work shows Venus watching over the sleeping god of war, Mars, while infant satyrs play with his weapons nearby. Its long, horizontal format suggests it was made to decorate a piece of Florentine furniture or a domestic panel.
