The second of two versions of Leonardo da Vinci's Virgin of the Rocks, showing the Virgin Mary, the infant Christ, the young John the Baptist, and an angel gathered in a rocky grotto. Leonardo's sfumato technique softens every edge, lending the scene its hushed, mysterious atmosphere.
