Curator’s note

Whistlejacket

George Stubbs's life-size portrait of about 1762 shows the Thoroughbred racehorse Whistlejacket rearing alone, without rider, landscape, or any other setting. Stubbs's deep understanding of equine anatomy is evident in the horse's precisely rendered musculature and stance.
