Curator’s note

A Young Woman Standing at a Virginal

Painted by Johannes Vermeer around 1670–72, this work shows a woman standing at a virginal, a domestic keyboard instrument. A painting of Cupid hangs on the wall behind her — an example of the picture-within-a-picture device Vermeer favoured in his interior scenes.
